Utility Regulation Unit

Overview

The Utility Regulation Unit represents the interests of Oklahoma's utility customers in energy, telecommunications and water utility rate-related matters in state and federal courts, as well as in regulatory proceedings primarily before the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. The unit's attorneys and analysts are involved in complex regulatory enforcement investigations and litigation to protect the public interest.

The matters addressed by the Utility Regulation Unit affect Oklahomans on a daily basis, because the issues relate to the necessary services used and purchased by consumers to power their lives and to communicate with each other. The unit advocates for just and reasonable rates for utilities’ customers as a whole, and for compliance with rules designed to promote quality utility service for Oklahomans.

In the course of the unit’s efforts on behalf of the state and its citizens, the unit works with and advises several state agencies that regulate and form policies relating to public utilities, including the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

The Utility Regulation Unit's Core Values

  • To advocate for reasonable and affordable utility rates for Oklahoma's public utility customers.
  • To balance the interests of residential, commercial and industrial customers.
  • To promote long-term, cost-effective and reasonable solutions to issues faced by the utility industry.
  • To encourage cost-effective energy efficiency programs that help defer additional capital expenditures by regulated utilities.
  • To eliminate corporate waste and unnecessary spending by public utilities.
