OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorney General Mike Hunter has sent a letter to congressional leadership, urging members to extend the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economy (CARES) Act funding until the end of 2021. 

The current deadline for officials to spend the money is Dec. 30. Any money not spent will go back to the federal government.

Attorney General Hunter said extending the deadline will ensure the funds are allocated properly.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorney General Mike Hunter today, in coordination with the Oklahoma Press Association (OPA), announced the relaxed rules for open meetings created through Senate Bill 661 will expire Sunday.

Any permanent changes to the Open Meetings Act or the Open Records Act must be changed in statute and cannot be modified through an executive order by the governor.

Attorney General Hunter said beginning Sunday, boards and commissions need to begin meeting as they did before the Coronavirus pandemic.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorney General Mike Hunter today announced his intention to file a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court, challenging a court decision rewriting Pennsylvania’s absentee ballot receipt deadline.

The brief argues that under the Constitution, state legislatures must choose the point to stop receiving absentee ballots and start counting votes, not state courts such as the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

CHANDLER – Attorney General Mike Hunter today announced a Lincoln County woman will serve 10 life sentences in prison after a jury found her guilty of multiple sex crimes involving four children with her boyfriend, who was convicted and sentenced last year.

According to court documents, Crystal Bales, 35, and Johnathan Moran, 43, involved all of their biological children in the sex acts. Three of the children tested positive for meth and one tested positive for marijuana. The children’s ages ranged from nine months to 10 years old.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorney General Mike Hunter today is urging Oklahomans to proceed with caution before selecting contractors when making repairs to property and clean up in the wake of the ice storm this week.

While Oklahomans begin to recover from the storm, the attorney general also reminds contractors and individuals the state’s Emergency Price Stabilization Act is still in effect for all 77 counties with the ongoing disaster emergency declaration.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorney General Mike Hunter today sent a letter to federal, state and Native American tribal leaders suggesting a path forward to allow for compacting on criminal matters, which would require federal legislation.

If legislation is passed, the compacts would allow the tribes the option to consent to shared state jurisdiction on criminal matters.

Attorney General Hunter said allowing this type of compacting authority can only come from federal legislation.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorney General Mike Hunter today sent a letter with a coalition of 21 other state attorneys general to members of the U.S. Senate, urging prompt confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In the letter, the attorneys general point to her experience, qualifications and judicial philosophy as hallmarks that will make her an outstanding associate justice.

Attorney General Hunter said Judge Barrett will apply the law as written and will enforce the original understanding of the Constitution.
